01 / BENEFITS
Why composites and 3D printing in defence?
Low weight, mobility and short lead times are now key requirements for modern military platforms. Composite materials and additive manufacturing technologies meet them better than many conventional methods.
Lower weight without compromising strength
Composites and parts printed from polymer powders and metal alloys (e.g. aluminium or Inconel) reduce component weight with no compromise on stiffness or strength. A lighter structure means greater mobility, range and payload capacity for the platform.
Resistance to harsh conditions
Composite materials do not corrode and withstand moisture, temperature changes and long-term field operation well.
Design freedom
3D printing makes it possible to produce geometries unattainable by machining or casting. Several parts can be consolidated into a single component, which simplifies assembly, reduces the number of joints and can significantly shorten part production time.
Shorter time from design to deployment
A prototype, short series or spare part can be produced without costly tooling. This shortens the development time of new designs and the response time to user needs.
European supply chain
We manufacture in Poland, based on our own materials and our own laboratory. This reduces dependence on suppliers from outside the European Union.
02 / APPLICATIONS
Applications in the defence sector
Composite materials and 3D-printed components from New Era Materials are used across all key operational domains: air, land and sea.
Composites and 3D printing for the air domain
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV/BSP)
In aviation, every kilogram counts: lower weight translates directly into greater endurance and higher payload capacity. New Era Materials’ materials can be used to manufacture lightweight structures and components for drones (UAVs), airframe components and electronics enclosures, including in combination with 3D-printed parts. Additively manufactured parts are well suited to jet engine components, heat exchangers and ultra-lightweight load-bearing structures, while NEMpreg prepreg is ideal for interior components, fairings and secondary structures. See the Unmanned vehicles section below for more details.
Composites and 3D printing for the maritime domain
Vessels and unmanned platforms
Owing to their resistance to corrosion and salt water, New Era Materials’ materials can be used to manufacture sensor housings and structural components for surface vessels and unmanned maritime platforms.
Composites and 3D printing for the land domain
Military vehicles and ground systems
Lightweight components for military vehicles reduce their weight and increase mobility without lowering crew protection. NEMplate composite plates and NEMsandwich sandwich panels are used to produce panels, covers and interior fit-out elements. The offer is complemented by metal 3D printing, which enables rapid production of brackets, housings and spare parts.
Individual equipment and electronic systems
Communications, optoelectronics and accessories
New Era Materials produces lightweight, durable materials that can be used for communications and optoelectronic device housings and soldier equipment accessories. These are made as NEMcomposites composite components or as parts 3D-printed by our Fibometry brand.
03 / MATERIALS
Composite materials for defence
The core of New Era Materials’ composite offer is the family of proprietary NEMpreg prepregs: epoxy resin-based materials reinforced with carbon fibre, glass, aramid or basalt fibre. They are used to make NEMplate plates, NEMsandwich sandwich panels and NEMcomposites components engineered for a specific application. Each material can be tailored to project requirements and its properties verified in our laboratory.
| NEMpreg | Fibre-reinforced epoxy prepregs | Basis for lightweight composite structures |
| NEMplate | Rigid structural plates | Vehicle panels and covers, load-bearing elements |
| NEMsandwich | Lightweight sandwich panels | Low-weight floors, walls and fit-outs |
| NEMcomposites | Custom-engineered components | Special parts to customer requirements |
04 / 3D PRINTING
3D printing for the defence industry – Fibometry
Fibometry is the New Era Materials brand under which we provide industrial 3D printing services. Fibometry produces parts in metal (DMLS/SLM) and polymers (MJF, SLS, SLA/DLP, FDM/FFF), from prototypes to end-use components. This means customers get composite materials and 3D printing from a single company, in a single process.
Technology details are described on the 3D Print page and in the Additive Manufacturing market section.
Metal 3D printing (DMLS / SLM)
Using DMLS / SLM technology, we produce fully functional end-use parts from aluminium, titanium, steel and copper alloys, as well as high-temperature nickel superalloys (Inconel).
DMLS / SLM (Direct Metal Laser Sintering / Selective Laser Melting) is used to manufacture strong, complex metal structures.
This makes it possible to:
- produce geometries impossible to achieve with conventional methods,
- consolidate multiple parts of a complex assembly into a single component,
- reduce weight while maintaining strength parameters,
- implement design changes quickly without new tooling.
Each part undergoes post-processing (including heat treatment and CNC machining) and quality control. Metal 3D printing is the area of greatest interest to the defence sector.NC) oraz kontrolę jakości. Druk 3D w metalu to obszar, który budzi największe zainteresowanie sektora obronnego.
Polymer 3D printing
Alongside metal 3D printing, we offer polymer technologies suited to both prototyping and series production of functional parts, tools and moulds.
MJF (Multi Jet Fusion): strong functional parts, short series
SLS (Selective Laser Sintering): housings, holders, parts with complex geometry
SLA / DLP (Stereolithography / Digital Light Processing): precision prototypes, models, moulds
FDM / FFF (Fused Deposition Modelling / Fused Filament Fabrication): prototypes, assembly fixtures, tooling
Polymer parts are finished using processes such as bead blasting, vibratory finishing, chemical smoothing, dyeing and coating.
Digital inventory of parts
We store production files in a secure digital inventory and manufacture parts on demand. This shortens delivery times, reduces the cost of holding physical stock and helps ensure equipment availability throughout its service life.
Building in-house additive manufacturing capabilities
We also support military units and research institutions that want to develop their own additive manufacturing capabilities.
05 / INTEGRATION
Unmanned vehicles: composites and 3D printing in a single structure
New Era Materials combines composite structures made from NEMpreg prepregs with parts 3D-printed by Fibometry into a single integrated NEMcomposites component. The solution is designed for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). We integrate both technologies in a single process and develop them in-house, which sets us apart on the Polish market.
NEMpreg
Lightweight composite structures based on our proprietary NEMpreg materials
Fibometry
Industrial 3D printing using professional powder-based technologies
NEMcomposites
Integrated component
In practice, this means that:
- lightweight skins and load-bearing structures made from NEMpreg prepregs are combined with printed nodes, mounts and housings,
- DMLS-printed metal parts carry loads where composite alone is not enough,
- a single team is responsible for the material, design, printing and lamination, eliminating the need to coordinate multiple suppliers,
- design changes between successive platform versions can be implemented within weeks, not months.
This approach works particularly well where low weight, lead time and the ability to scale production quickly are critical.
06 / TRUST
Quality, certifications and confidentiality
New Era Materials holds ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management) certifications, as well as a licence from the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) for activities in the field of military products and technologies.
In-house laboratory and R&D department
In our laboratory, we test the mechanical, thermal and fire properties of materials as well as their ageing resistance. This allows us to verify a solution quickly and shorten the path from sample to series production.
Project confidentiality
Projects for the defence sector are carried out under non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). Technical data and production files are stored in a secure environment, accessible only to personnel involved in the project.
